Charity, Fashion and Sheer Brilliance at The Future Awards 2011 Nominees Reception!

On Sunday 19 December 2010, under a bright, beautiful skyline, Nigeria’s most influential youth event, The Future Awards hosted its 2011 nominees to its annual Nominees Reception for charity. Held at Ember Creek, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, it unveiled the nominees to the public and the press and also was an opportunity to network.
Adebola Williams, Operations Director of the awards noted that “all the nominees deserve to be winners. They are all exceptional individuals and we are celebrating them at this event”. Certificates, signed by members of the awards board: former national planning minister Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi and chairman of The Guardian Editorial Board Dr. Reuben Abati, were presented to all the nominees at the event.
Hosted by Wale Dizzy, on-air personality and actor and Face of Sleep 2010 Makida, it also featured the Get Your Green On! fashion show. The Get Your Green On! fashion show is a Naija-centric campaign where the Nigerian image is celebrated in colour and content. The campaign had designers Zebra, IamISIGO, Onyx & Pearl and House of Nwocha showcased green inspired designs from their collections – giving guests ideas for the awards proper.
The Nominees Reception – which started with the national anthem by new act Darash - also had smashing performances from Chidynma, award-winning MoCheddah, and young rapper, Skales. Tiwa Savage also spiced the event up with a honeyed rendition of Alicia Keys’ If I aint got you before performing her Kele Kele Love. Comedian Castro and Newcomer Hip-hop duo, One Block Away also performed. Guests at the event were a roll call of A-list celebrity including Ini Edo, Mercy Johnson, Uche Jumbo, Kel, Tinsel’s Gideon Okeke, Toni Payne, and others.
The Future Awards 2010 had earlier in the month unveiled the full list of Nominees. The nominees were spread 21 categories. Categories include Actor of the Year, Best Use of Advocacy, Best Use of Science, Best Use of Technology, Business Owner of the Year, Comedian of the Year, Creative Artist of the Year, Creative Professional of the Year, Designer of the Year and Excellence in Public Service. Other categories include: Journalist of the Year, Magazine of the Year, Musician of the Year, OAP Radio, OAP TV, Corporate Professional of the Year, Screen Producer of the Year, Sport Person of the Year, Team of the Year and Young Person of the Year.
The organisers also opened up a two-week window period where complaints can be received on the age or qualification of the nominees. Public voting ends on December 31. The awards night is scheduled for 30 January 2011.
The event was supported by Access Bank, HiTV, Miccom Gold Resorts, Cool FM and Wazobia FM. Official Media Partner is Y! (www.ynaija.com).

A-Q launch debut Album / A-Q delivers a champagne Album launch party.

Controversial and Imperial lyricist launched his official debut album at a club party held at upscale bar and lounge Club Karma on December 4. History was made as Controversial and Imperial lyricist, A-Q beyond launching his official debut record brought the mainstream music audience with the appearance and performance from star artistes including a launch with a thousand copies of the limited edition jewel case CD of the album as the first debutant and rap artiste to break such a feat.

It was indeed a thrashing night was had by music lovers who rock and rolled the night away when A-Q launched his new album into the small hours of the day.

The night of energetic music included performances from DJ Zeez, Skuki, Iceberg slim, Side one, Pope, Eva, Mtrill, Rico white and the host rapper AQ.

A black carpet and paparazzi session that lasted two hours was graced by celebrity photographer Kelechi Amadi, South African star model popularly known as Cod Read and Rooftop MCs, to mention a few.

It was a loaded line up with emerging stars Yung Drug, MiekHarry and Lagos kicking off proceedings around 10pm for what would be 6 hours of continuous entertainment, with International DJ Spinall backing up all the performing acts. After the first performance, next up was M Trill who gave a huge hi-energy performance and definitely won over new fans with his fast growing new single ‘Trilla’ and ‘Kolobi’, then Iceberg Slim who ensured that the entire crowd sang along as he performed the 'Better than M.I.' track. Pope was next and held the crowd down for almost 15mins running through all his fairly new catalogue of records. Side-one might seem to be taking to a passive mode but his performance on the night revealed otherwise - fans sang along as he performed 'one by one' and his new record, exciting was his set that he left the stage and went into the crowd. Partner and labelmate Xtrim quickly and even when he moved from the DJ booth to make an entry, it was clear that the crowd was ready for him to do his thing; he held the stage as only he can.

With the host, Kris Razor (Beat FM on-air personality) informing the crowd that one half of Skuki was 'in the building', A-Q climbed the stage Just after midnight.

It was an invaluable experience for any A-Q stan, and a truly inspiring evening. It’s clear that A-Q is constantly evolving as an artist and creator track by track. His passion and vision for creating art is far bigger than Hip-Hop.

Like a veteran, A-Q ran through tracks from 'The Past, Present and Future' album. The crowd went into euphoria when tracks like Diary, Soldout, Names where Xtrim came back on stage Nightmares, Blame it, If I should die - a track inspired by Da Grin and Names remix with Iceberg slim, were performed.

One half of the Skuki duo was next performing their hit track ‘Banger’ and new single with Mocheeda, Stamina.

Copies of The 1000 limited jewel cased CD were also on sale at the event for a NGN1000. Digital copy of the album can be downloaded from online store like Nigerianhiphop.net now (Buy here: http://nigerianhiphop.net/2010/12/14/aq-the-past-present-future-buy-album/ ), priced at $6.99 for the album and would be available on Repnaijaartist.com, Mytruspot.com, Zoodrums.com and iTunes shortly.

All in all it was an incredible event, with chamapgne for invited guest, amazing performance set, a 100,000 watts sound system, anchored by Kris Razor who ran the stage for close to 7 hours.

The event was filmed by Hip TV, Soundcity TV, Syndicated TV show, Views and Tunes, TV continental and over the coming weeks it will air on national and continental platforms, other media present.

Suranu: The Next Big Thing From J-Town

By Eromo Egbejule

Jos or J-town as the new generation calls it never ceases to amaze us. Or to be in the news. Some days ago, it was MI Abaga whose new album title, MI2 was trending on Twitter. Even Tom Cruise was so disturbed he thought the sequel to his hit, Mission Impossible had been released without him in it! Imagine!

This year, J-town gives us another new star, the young Suranu whose fiery bars have been doing positive damage (how's that?) all over the ancient city.

Born in 1990 to Rev. and Mrs. Barje Maigadi as Suranu Maigadi in Jos, Plateau State, the rapper is the last of four children and completed his elementary and primary training in Uncle Sam's land. His secondary school education was completed here in Nigeria and he is at present a 300-level Law undergraduate of the prestigious University of Jos.

Love or hate his stage name, the lad does not care and goes on to explain that his real name (which means finished in his native language) portrays him better than any funky alias would've done. That is a testimony to the down-to-earth nature of this young man who began to listen to the rap genre as far back as when he was a kid. According to him, "when I was a kid, my sister always used to listen to the radio. So I was influenced by many different genres. What mostly had an impact on me was rap done by The Fugees and R&B by R. Kelly and BoyzIIMen. As I started growing up, rap music became my main influence; Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, Drake and any other person I could get my hands on." He began actively rapping in 2008 and has continued to develop rapidly since then.

He hasn't worked with any of them Choc City boys but has worked with several other Nigerians including Skales who MI lists as one of his top ten Nigerian rappers this year and J-town music acts such as Verbz of F.A.C., Echo of T.I.C. Endia, Kahli and also the producer, Ajebutta.

I ask him to lend a voice to the growing debate in some circles about who the better rapper is between Ice Prince and MI Abaga, his fellow J-towners. His answer is evasive: "both of them have talents that exceed the normal expectation. in my opinion they're both good at what they do, in their own different ways". But when asked to name his top three Nigerian emcees, Ice Prince tops the list. And there's Naeto C and Mode 9 too. We disagree on who's the best rapper ever dead or alive. I say Eminem but he thinks its the diva Beyonce's boo, Jay-Z.

I tease him that he's too cute to not have a girlfriend but he outsmarts and plainly disappoints me. In his words, "this kid is young and single. I think there's a time for everything and right now is the time to work." So, Eves, now you know. There's a vacancy to apply for in Suranu's life!

In recent times, Jos has been compared to Brooklyn, New York in that some of the best Nigerian rappers are either from or have at one time resided in the city, from Terry tha Rapman to the Chocolate City's trio, Ice Prince and the Abaga brothers but Suranu doesn't think its safe to make that comparison. To him, "Jos and Brooklyn are two completely different places that provide the world with different flavours of music".

I ask about the challenges of the rap industry. He says, "the major challenge in the industry is that as an up-and-coming musician, you are easily neglected. It takes a lot for you to even find someone to give you an ear let alone support your career. Another challenge is the pressure to conform to already set ways of making music or doing stuff. If you dare to be different, you'd probably be pushed aside."Many parents do not support their kids doing music at the outset but for Suranu, this is not so. There's been no objection from them. At least, not yet. Probably because he is the last child and has been spoilt in no small way by them.

Welcome to My Thoughts is the title of his mixtape which was released on the 25th November, today. Is he giving us a free pass into his thoughts to know the bad things in his mind? I'll be too glad to get that pass, I add. His reply is simple. "Welcome to My Thoughts is exactly what the title implies. I'm translating my thoughts into music. if you want to get into my thoughts then you have to download the mixtape." The link to the mixtape is given at the end of this piece. His songs are laced with punchlines because to him, "Rap is a craft and in that craft, certain tools like metaphors, punchlines and storytelling are used. I choose to use more punchlines because I'm attracted to riddles and wise sayings." This dude is brilliant! I then ask about the song "Touch It" and its sexual undertone, if it is an indication that he daring to be different, daring to be the Snoop Dogg of Nigeria? His reply is yet again simple. "The only indication there is for me, is that I'm ready and willing to make good music that I will enjoy and above all what the fans would enjoy too." I ask a favour of him; to freestyle using my name. He obliges and goes:

Egbejule Eromo / giving me some promo/
Introduce me to the world / yes am the way to go

Some of his songs are already online. According to him, a lot of people have begun to appreciate his music. "They walk up to me and say 'good job' and stuff like that for all my songs." Concerning the brilliant video, Good Life, he says truthfully, "Good Life as you said, was brilliant but I can't take the credit for it. The concept came from my manager and producer Charlie X who teamed up with Eddie Lapang who was the maestro behind the art work and effects. "

He likes to keep up with the trends in fashion but is no Denrele Edun and doesn't want to be a fashion icon. He also plans to move to Lagos, the entertainment capital of Nigeria as soon as he is through with his education to make the proper impact on the industry by being "at the front line of the business which is Lagos."

His last word to up-and-coming rappers is to "believe in yourself and your art. And also work hard, really hard because when I started rap I didn't think I was that good, but Charlie X (my manager) told me if I was willing to put my head down and work, ther'de be nothing I wouldn't be able to achieve." I nod in agreement. Good advice.

Just before I end the interview, I ask Suranu something that has been bothering my mind since I saw his cute face. What is his poison? I can feel his smile as he answers: women. I laugh. Suranu is a kindred spirit.

The Pope blesses us all

Born Michael Egube in Benin City, Pope is the 1st child & only son of his parents with two beautiful sisters. Pope spent his early years at oil-rich Warri before moving to Lagos. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of influences including Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z and Fela; he started music at an early age, learning to play the keyboard while in primary school. He later added the drums and bass guitar to his repertoire in secondary school, as well as what would ultimately become his foremost skill: rap. By 2008, Pope had become a respected name on the underground hip-hop scene in Nigeria, where he cut his teeth on numerous underground mixtapes while honing his signature melody-driven rap sound, eventually getting the attention of Cackland Music, his current label home. With his two official debut singles just released ('Enjoy'-which he sampled Fela & fused it with jazzy hip-hop to make a classic & 'Baale Baale'-which he made a club hit from only drums) and his debut album slated for release later this year, Pope has effectively proven that he is set to take the entertainment industry in Africa by storm. He speaks with Kanyisola Doherty about his next plan. Edited by ada igboanugo
Why the choice of the stage name 'Pope'?

Well, 'Pope' originated from a Latin word 'Papa', which we all know means father. So the name 'Pope' as a stage name hereby signifies that I'm the father of the new school hip-hop and I'm set to give birth to a new revolution of hip-hop in Africa and the world as a whole.

What will you call your style of music?
well personally I call it 'legend-music' because what I'm doing is legendary....it's a fusion of different genres, with hip-hop & afro-music being more dominant.

What influences your music?
On one hand, it's the artistes I listen to...like Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Fela, Kanye West...and on the other hand it's stuff I go through personally, or observe in my environment, and sometimes stuff that I see other people go through and I feel others out there can relate to.

Your singles 'Enjoy' and 'Baale Baale' are enjoying massive airplay on radio, should we expect any videos?
The Video for 'ENJOY' would premier in a couple days...Had so much fun during the shoot and it's a very amazing video that y'all should watch out for!

What do you think about the Nigerian Music Industry?
Personally, I would say the Music Industry in Nigeria has started to grow rapidly considering what it used to be and what it is now...but if we look at our foreign counterparts, we can tell that we still got a long way to go.

Your perfect everyday look will be?
Ans: Hmmmmm...A tee-shirt, nice pair of jeans and snickers...I like to keep it simple.

What's next for Pope?
A couple more hits, couple more collabos, a couple of awards, couple albums and what y'all have heard is just a tip of d iceberg...Currently working on a Mixtape with DJ Humility which should be out soon. Its gonna be different, legendary. Y'all should watch out....
The revolution has just begun!!!

Superstar Producer Cobhams Asuquo weds his sweetheart Ojuola Olukanni

It was a day filled with blessings, joy, music and love as Nigerian music maestro Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo wed Ojuolape Veronica Olukanni on the 2nd of December 2010.

For Cobhams and Ojuola, it was truly a blessing to celebrate their union surrounded by their close family and friends. Their marriage was solemnized at the Redeemed Christian Church of God – The King is Coming Parish at the Redemption Camp. The General Overseer of the RCCG – Pastor Enoch Adeboye along with his wife were present at the ceremony and played a major role in the proceedings as they prayed for the couple and helped usher them into married life.

After their church ceremony, Cobhams and Ojuola proceeded to their wedding reception at the Redemption Resort. The theme of the reception was “Pray, Eat, Love & Dance” and they did that and more! Ojuola reminiscent of a Victorian-era princess in her elegant lace wedding dress and Coby perfectly complemented his wife in his three-piece grey-blue wedding suit.

It was an absolutely beautiful event, the reception hall was decked in orange, silver and white, with twinkling fairy lights and beautiful swaths which created an intimate yet festive ambiance. As expected, music played a major role in the proceedings; there were performances from artistes including Bez and Timi Dakolo serenaded the couple during their first dance. Cobhams and Ojuola’s first dance was thrilling and romantic, they held each close and savoured this special moment – then Cobhams twirled his bride and then whipped her up into his arms! It was a thoroughly romantic moment.

A Beautiful Day for A Blessed Couple. BN wishes Cobhams and Ojuola a blessed life together as one!
