Superstar Producer Cobhams Asuquo weds his sweetheart Ojuola Olukanni

It was a day filled with blessings, joy, music and love as Nigerian music maestro Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo wed Ojuolape Veronica Olukanni on the 2nd of December 2010.

For Cobhams and Ojuola, it was truly a blessing to celebrate their union surrounded by their close family and friends. Their marriage was solemnized at the Redeemed Christian Church of God – The King is Coming Parish at the Redemption Camp. The General Overseer of the RCCG – Pastor Enoch Adeboye along with his wife were present at the ceremony and played a major role in the proceedings as they prayed for the couple and helped usher them into married life.

After their church ceremony, Cobhams and Ojuola proceeded to their wedding reception at the Redemption Resort. The theme of the reception was “Pray, Eat, Love & Dance” and they did that and more! Ojuola reminiscent of a Victorian-era princess in her elegant lace wedding dress and Coby perfectly complemented his wife in his three-piece grey-blue wedding suit.

It was an absolutely beautiful event, the reception hall was decked in orange, silver and white, with twinkling fairy lights and beautiful swaths which created an intimate yet festive ambiance. As expected, music played a major role in the proceedings; there were performances from artistes including Bez and Timi Dakolo serenaded the couple during their first dance. Cobhams and Ojuola’s first dance was thrilling and romantic, they held each close and savoured this special moment – then Cobhams twirled his bride and then whipped her up into his arms! It was a thoroughly romantic moment.

A Beautiful Day for A Blessed Couple. BN wishes Cobhams and Ojuola a blessed life together as one!

The Police is Your Friend...NOT!

by Noble

A few days ago, Nollywood starlet, Ufuoma Ejenobor, wrote this on her FB status;

“I was assaulted by policemen attached to the convoy of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker (Adeyemi Ikuforiji) on the 29th of October 2010. They hit my car and drove on without regarding their act. When I started recording it, they got angry, assaulted me and took my blackberry phone... which they still have till date.”

Normally that's where Naija police stories end, but it's being taken a step further. Today, the Lagos Assembly announced plans to sue Ufuoma for blackmail and extortion. Before I even rant, abeg watch this video of what happened exactly;

listen to what the driver of the police car had to say;

"Even if it is true that we hit her car, which cannot be proven from the video recording, when there is an accident on the road, the first thing you do is not to call a lawyer. So, it was obvious she was onto something right from the beginning and that was why the Speaker directed that everything be recorded," he said.

they hit her car, assaulted her, tried to belittle her as a woman and are now going to sue her? Of all the ridiculous things I've heard in my life. That is why I laugh at Naija police. They are a prime example of the saying absolute power corrupts absolutely. "Even if we hit her", can you imagine the nonsense? HER FUCKING CAR WAS IN THE GUTTER! Why the fuck won't she first call her lawyer? Were they expecting she'll first call her daddy and mommy to cry? She gave them fire for fire and now they are trying to use unjust government politics to further maltreat her? I just love how she entered blaze with them. Why would you hit my car and shout on me on top? Maka gini kwa? O bu onye?

Jon gets trashed by Nollywood stars at Writer’s Angst

The Lagos book fair which took place from the 11-14 of November featured a segment tagged, ‘Writers Angst’,coordinated by Onyeka Nwelue, a platform created for young writers to vent their frustrations on publishers and publishing firms.
The maiden edition of the event organized by CORA and moderated by Kachiri Nnochiri, former contestant, AMBO, had discussants such as Onyeka Nwelue (Award Winning Author of Abysimmian Boy) Ifedigbo Nze Sylva(writer) Gimba Kakanda (poet) Eromo Egbejule (writer) Wana Udobang (writer/TV and radio presenter) who was one of the absentees, Prince Adewale Oreshade (lawyer/ poet) and tosin Otitoju (poet/lecturer) who both arrived late and had the curtsey to admit it was very rude of them.
The discussion which graced the Main Exhibition Hall of the National Theatre, Iganmu, focused on the absence of Publishing firms and the ineffectiveness of existing ones in the country. It also revealed how Publishers dictate what kind of stories should be told and the style of writing that should be adopted by writers in other to get published.
Jon Ogah, winner of the maiden edition of Naija Sings and one of the numerous celebrities present emerged to buttress a point on what was being discussed but disappointed his fellow celebs present and the audience by being able to mention famous American Writers but not knowing the author of the age-old world-wide award-winning book, ‘Things fall apart’
The (Nollywood) stars present such Patrick Doyle, Francis Onuoha and veteran publisher,, each trooped out to tongue-lash the singer for his poor memory. Even stage writer, Wole Oguntokun gave his own fair share of criticism. Albeit the misfortune, Jon made a very good point which, in fact, paved way for these same Celebs and others to make theirs and take a cue from.
He urged Directors and Film Producers among the crowd to adopt their predecessor’s method of producing millions of dollar movies today- by making a movie out of Nigerian Books. Patrick Doyle and Francis Onuoha went further to stress the possibility of the idea with Mr Onuoha revealing his missionary journey to take Nollywood round the world and the warm reception he gets wherever he goes. Ace photographer, Soibifa Dokubo was not left out of it as he took his turn advising the young writers to write about their environment and culture rather than tag along the foreign mode of telling stories.
But the supposed ‘Writers Angst’ became the ‘Publishers angst’ when veteran publisher,, took the mic to rant about why it isn’t the duty of a publisher to publish a writer’s manuscript. He cited an example of the Olympics Bronze medallist, Yagazie Chukwumerije and how his success today solely depends on his father’s huge expenses. In his words, ‘’if you want to get published, tell your father to pay for it. It is a two-way thing. Play your own part. Every good manuscript would eventually find a publisher.’’
He went ahead to encourage the young writers to stop waiting to be spoon fed. ‘’They should get out there and get their books self-published. That’s the only pride they’d have over it.’’

UNILAG Law Undergraduate Honoured at LEAP AFRICA Awards

By Olaitan Balogun

University of Lagos (UNILAG) law student, Adeola Austin Oyinlade, who is also the presenter of a programme, Know Your Constitution, on UNILAG 103.1 FM radio station,  has won this year 7th Annual Nigerian Youth Leadership Awards of LEAP AFRICA. Leadership, Effectiveness, Accountability & Professionalism ( LEAP ) Africa is a nonprofit organisation developing dynamic, innovative and principled leaders who will drive Africa ’s realization of its full potential and it recognizes and celebrates the contribution of Young people to Nigeria’s development.

Adeola,  who was commissioned on May this year as United Nations Young Ambassador for Peace for his contribution to National and International development,  was yesterday, Thursday 11th November, 2010,  presented the LEAP AFRICA awards among other four young Nigerians out of over 140 young people nominated for this year awards at Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos through his initiative, Know Your Constitution.

According to Adeola, "Know Your Constitution" on UNILAG 103.1 FM is a radio programme being presented to Lagosian in a simple language that ordinary man on the street can comprehend.  According to Adeola, ‘the programme asks people from all walks of life on the awareness of their rights as contained in the Nigeria ’s constitution and other laws in force in Nigeria ’. The young ambassador also brings lawyers to studio to educate people on the positions of law to solve legal issues that arise in listeners daily activities. Among Legal luminaries that have contributed on the programme to educate people include, Muhammad Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of Nigeria; Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, immediate past president of the Nigerian Bar Association; Professor Akin Oyebode, International law expert; Professor Oyelowo Oyewo, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos; Mr. Bamidele Aturu, Human Rights Activist; Professor Ayo Atsenuwa; Mr. Akintayo
Akinola, Mr. Malachi Ugwumandu, human rights experts, among others.

In his words: "My mission and vision for this initiative is to contribute immensely to expanding the frontiers of liberty, human rights, democracy and happiness of ordinary citizens in Nigeria . To empower Nigerians and Non-Nigerians alike on how to enforce their rights and to achieve Nigeria been delisted from the list of Human rights violation countries". The programme has however empowered Lagosian to make legal decisions on legal matters. Many Listeners who had land issues for example with 'OMO ONILE' after free legal counsel on the programme now boast of valid titles over plot of lands bought when it was established on the programme that reliance only on receipts from the family that sell plots of land gives buyers 'equitable title' not 'Legal title title' until such Land is perfected, it will not stop being subjected to court litigations and fraudulent extortion from sellers most especially when such plots are sold to more than a buyer.

Sill on the impact of the programme, it has created easy access to the Lagos state police incase of emergency and effective response from Lagos state police command to the yearning of Lagosians. Adeola said ‘I invited the Lagos state Police Public Relation officer, Mr. Frank Mba live on the programme to speak on 'the constitutional power of the police and its duties' and i also allowed listeners to call in live to clarify issues. I asked for on behalf of Lagosians direct phone contacts of all 8 police commandas in Lagos state which was disclosed to the public by Mr. Mba himself during the course of the interview so that people can have direct access to the police in case of emergency. The feedback so far from Lagosians and the police gave me joy the programme is having direct impact on people.’

The human right crusader is planning to go to many streets of Lagos and empower Lagosians by giving out 50,000 copies of the 1999 constitutions free of charge on 10th December, United Nations International Human rights day as to reduce the high percentage of ignorance of Law and encourage political participation needed from Nigerians to sustain Nigeria's nascent democracy as Nigeria goes in to general elections in the year 2011. The award winner is seeking partnership from Individual and organizations for donations of 50,000 copies of the 1999 Constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria and two buses to move people and copies of the constitutions on the streets of Lagos .

Young Nigerian Leaders advocate for Visionary Leadership at the 16th Nigerian Economic Summit

The 16th Nigeria Economic Summit held recently at the Transcorp Hilton hotel Abuja. This 2010 is acclaimed to be the best and most productive ever. It was the coming together of brilliant minds to strategise the way forward for our great nation Nigeria. For the first time in its 16 year existence, the youths were given an opportunity at the summit through a special youth summit. The youth summit was well attended by leaders of Corporate Nigeria and delegates from The Rise Group {www.risenetworks.org}, the Nation’s Leading youth Empowerment and development organization.
The youth summit was originally billed to discuss the dearth of blue collar workers and vocational training in the country. But the passion and energy of the youth shifted the course of the summit into discussing Visionary Leadership as the primary catalyst for Nigeria’s emergence as a great nation. At a time when politicians were more particular about zoning and not competency, the youths had their own agenda of defining our future by choosing right; the 2011 elections the defining battle ground.
The youth summit of the 16th Nigerian Economic Summit was mentally engaging.

It highlighted the strategy for the emancipation of the Great Nation Nigeria; where the Established [Old guard] must work with the Emerging [Youths] to birth a better Nigeria
Our cause was championed by the brilliant Fela Durotoye, Linus Okorie, Super Toyosi Akerele, Fareeda Muhktar and Tosin Otitoju. The youth summit brought together the deliberation of minds from both the emerging [youths] and the established [elderly] leaders in the room. It was passionately engaging with elderly people standing for over 15 minutes to have their points heard, a proof that together we can make Nigeria a great Nation.

Below is an experience as narrated by one of the distinguished Young Participants:
Adeshina Oyetayo, 1st Runner Up, CNN African Journalist of the Year, 2007

As a writer, I have always held strongly that the value system of Nigeria could only witness a positive change if among other things, there was an availability of biographies and autobiographies of those leaders and role models that a vast majority of youths look up to. And I was glad when this argument was upheld by a panelist at the emerging leaders’ forum of the 16th Nigerian Economic Summit which held Wednesday, October 20th at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
According to the panelist, a banker actually, he admitted that Nigeria has a large youth market that must be made to dream audacious dreams by reading the true life experiences and trajectories of those that came before. “Youths need role models in order to have big dreams and a clear vision of where they are headed; and they must be made to realize that hard work pays,” he said, I nodded in agreement. If not anything else, the summation of this particular panelist was like a clarion call to me especially, and other writers in general, to be more proactive with our skills and help re-orientate the Nigerian youth that the surest path to fame and success is hard work and a clear vision.
Another highlight for me particularly was the large number of youths doing wondrously well in their different endeavours and who all came to be part of the forum. I was (still am) bowled by the fact that Adebola Williams is just 24 and yet, we have been acquainted for more than five years; that my friend, sister and collaborator, Toyosi Akerele, founder, Rise Group has in a short while become a successful entrepreneur and compulsive motivational speaker with speaking engagements all over the world; and even more profoundly, Gbenga Sesan’s astronomical heights in information and communication technology and advocacy.
Even the elders present during the Session who were made up of respectable Nigerians who have made commendable impact on the Economic landscape of Nigeria agreed and attested to the fact that we are ‘the turning point generation’.
The NESG Director General, Mr. Frank Nweke jnr should be applauded for sincerely and passionately pushing forward the Course of young people while also believing strongly in their innate potential, creativity and capacity to propel Nigeria to an enviable height.
He also promised to compile the insightful and practical recommendations of the Discussants and send them to the Government for further approval and inclusion in our national policy.

Celebrity, Inspiration as The Future Awards launches Season 6!

- Nominations now open for The Future Awards 2011
The highly anticipates launch of the sixth season of Nigeria’s biggest youth event, The Future Awards, held on the eve of Nigeria’s 50th anniversary, Thursday, Sept 30 – at Terra Kulture in Lagos. The event was hosted by Tinsel’s Gideon Okeke and Omalicha of Rhythm FM.
The event, which as usual attracted the crème of young professionals, entrepreneurs, artists and others as well as national media, was different this year. Themed #TheAuthenticCelebration, it was the most prominent youth celebration of Nigeria at 50, it honoured 50 of the past winners of the awards over the past five years who have made sustained impact and who are relevant as role models to young people.
“We tagged them the Face of the Future,” said Shade Ladipo, a member of the awards’ Central Working Committee. “Because we believe that they are icons for the next generation of Nigerian leaders, who will take our country back. And we did this to ensure that young people claim Nigeria’s 5oth anniversary from the old guard of leaders.” The 50 selected winners will also be featured in the special Commemorative Independence Edition of Y! magazine, which hits the streets on Monday, October 11 2010.
Ladipo also made a presentation of the awards’ activities over the past years, which includes courtesy visits to political and economic leaders, post-awards school seminars, helping to found Nigeria’s most prominent political advocacy campaign for young Nigerians, EnoughisEnough Nigeria, partnering and helping to launch several high-visibility projects targeted at developing young people.
Performers included Waje, Omobaba, Christine Ben-Ameh, and new artiste Sagay unveiled an #IamNigeria theme song. Also at the event, this year’s media campaign was also launched. Every year, The Future Awards season is driven by a media campaign. 2006 was ‘it’s about time’, and 2009 was ‘I am the future’. This year’s campaign is tagged #IamNigeria – and promos unveiled at the venue featured 2face Idibia (Musician of the Year 2006), Tosin Otitoju (Young Person of the Year 2006) and Stephanie Okereke (Young Person of the Year Candidate 2010).
“#IamNigeria is a campaign we wanted to run last year for the 2010 edition, but decided to delay because we thought it would be more appropriate as Nigeria marches into the next 50 years of its life,” Ladipo said. “So last, year, the Resource Group and the Central Working Committee decided to launch the #IRepresentNigeria/#IRepresentNaija campaign, which was massively successful and continues to be popular with young people up until now. #IamNigeria is the natural progression from last year’s campaign.”
Explaining the idea behind #IamNigeria, the creative director of the awards, Chude Jideonwo, in a speech delivered at the venue, said: “This year, we are leaving no room for error or ambiguity: we are not just Nigerians, we are not just the future, we don’t just represent Nigeria; we are Nigeria. We are a generation of pioneers, of innovators; we are roses that grew out of thorns, the generation they thought was done for, but the world is now celebrating. We are the generation that will go out into the elections next year and take our country back. We are the generation that, in the last year of Nigeria’s 50 year cycle, finally said: enough is enough.”

Why we are Nigeria
By Chude Jideonwo

Being Keynote Address, delivered at the launch of The Future Awards Season 6 at Terra Kulture, Lagos on Thursday, September 30, 2010.
Last year, on this same stage, we spent a few words reminding Nigerians about what we have to celebrate as a nation. One year after, celebration is, literally, in the air. Tomorrow, our country completes its 50th year, and Nigeria begins yet another cycle in its evolution.
But is there, really, anything to celebrate? For the month or two, many Nigerians have relocated to Abuja, joining a posse of our compatriots looking for a bit – any bit – of the billions of naira budgeted to celebrate 50 years. All over the country, tomorrow, there will be concerts and parties, raves and grooves, all to celebrate this nation that many of us have regularly criticized and cursed.
Shouldn’t it be a day for, as Nigerians say it, sober reflection? Shouldn’t we be having summits, conferences, seminars, work and talk shops, instead of feel-good parties, dissecting where we went wrong as a nation; and how the next 50 will be different?
Allow me quote liberally from Ako Amadi, a columnist with NEXT newspapers. “On October 1,” he said this week. “Nigerians will surely wake up to the pounding of marching boots and martial music, complemented by a rumble of armoured vehicles, the flight display of combat aircraft. What else? The inspection of a guard-of-honour and, in the evening, a state banquet, valedictory speeches, laughter and music, cultural dances, comedians and clowns.”
But, rejoice though we may, the truth is none of this will help us find out when young school-leavers will get jobs, or how tens of millions of Nigerians who live on less than a dollar a day will find that basic of all needs – food. It won’t answer where the many displaced from their homes in shanties in Lagos will live or where the banned okada riders will find jobs.
At the drop of a hat, we will rejoice and we will felicitate, but it would seem that when it comes to the urgent business of nation building, we are found wanting. We have been called a neo-failed state; we have been described as a sleeping giant, we have been identified as one of a club of Africans countries that have qualified the continent to be called, by The Economist, the “basket case of the world”.
And so when many say that October 1, 2010, must be marked, not celebrated, one sympathises, understands; in fact almost embraces, that point of view. Those are the people that say this occasion should be a serious warning that time is running out for this nation; that “vultures are hovering above in expectation of a putrescent cadaver, when a very sick Nigeria is finally strangled to death by its corrupt elite.” Because, indeed, our dear country has not fulfilled, or even neared its potential. Our leaders are fiddling – paying for carnivals to declare for president of a crippled colony - while Nigeria decays and burns. “The masses don't care about anything, anymore. This jubilee will be anything but golden. The thrill, perhaps, is gone.
Still, we announce today, not with wanton excitement, but with guarded optimism that there is yet something to celebrate. It is instructive for us that The Future Awards, founded to show hope in our future, is passing its 5th year in the same year that Nigeria is passing its 50th because we see it as a fantastic opportunity to emphasise our message.
Our message is and has always been that we have something to celebrate in the fact that young people have managed to excel in spite of our many problems. That faith that the young people have retained in the country is most responsible for its existence and most responsible for the hope that we have in the nation’s future.
We tagged today TheAuthenticCelebration because we said to ourselves that we cannot allow this symbolic occasion be hijacked by the old guard, the same old destructive forces.
This is the cusp of a truly new dawn, and we must seize this moment to lay claim to our future; to our country; to our vision of a society that works, and which people can truly achieve their potential. Sitting at home or shouting on Twitter and moaning, while they spend our national resources in a farce is not acceptable. We also must celebrate - celebrate the possibilities, the opportunities, the vista. The old guard counts on the fact that we will continue to cede the field to them, same way they expect that next year – after all our noise – we will not Register, we will not Select, we will not Vote and we will not Protect our votes. From tomorrow, the new beginning of a new dawn, we must begin to more strongly send a message that the game has changed.
We must state that any national celebration or nation building effort that does not have the youth at its centre and at its core is not legitimate. That is why today we have gathered 50 of Nigeria’s best, whom we describe as the Face of the Future; past winners of these awards – scientists, engineers, innovators, pioneers, professionals, entrepreneurs, artists - who have made continued impact and are relevant at the moment. The old rank of leaders has had the last 50 years. These young people are icons for the thousands who will chart Nigeria’s course for the next 50.
Because we, who almost singlehandedly built new industries in technology, IT, new media, music, fashion, style, events, movies, comedy, development, are the real Nigeria. We are the ones who decided against fleeing the country in a moment of frustration; who have stuck with it through rain and shine; who have maintained a resolute faith in the works of our hands and the power of our visions. We are Nigeria, not them! Not them!
Enough of allowing them – and you know who the3y are – claim a destiny, a country that belongs to you and me.
In 2008, The Future Awards campaign was “We are the future”, last season we made bold to say “We represent Nigeria”. But this year, we are leaving no room for error or ambiguity. We are not just Nigerians, we are not just the future, we don’t just represent Nigeria; we are Nigeria.
We are a generation of pioneers, of innovators, we are roses that grew out of thorns, the generation they called wasted but the whole world is now celebrating; we are the generation that will go out into the lections next year and take our country back. We are the generation that, in the last year of Nigeria’s first cycle of 50, finally said: enough is enough.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the future.

The Future Awards launches Season 6 with #TheAuthenticCelebration!

- Celebrates 50 of Nigeria’s most influential young leaders
12 September 2010 – The organisers of The Future Awards (TFA), regarded as Nigeria’s biggest youth event, have announced the kick off of the sixth season. The Future Awards is an annual series of events that last an average of six months, kicking off in October every year and lasting through the awards to the post-awards school seminars.
According to designer Ohimai Atafo, who heads the Central Working Committee, “it kicks off with an official launch event, and then town hall meetings across the country and outside (last year: Ghana, South Africa and the United Kingdom). Then there is the Nominees Reception and the Get Your Green On! style campaign – it’s always an exciting period.”
The official launch event is an invitation-only event and holds on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Terra Kulture in Lagos.
“This year it’s special,” says Debie Mangut, the awards’ External Relations director. “The Future Awards is passing its 5th year in the same year that Nigeria is passing its 50th. For both, it’s the beginning of a new era, and to mark that era, we are doing a special event called Face of the Future. Here, we have selected 50 of the past winners of The Future Awards who have made continued impact and are relevant at the moment and we are celebrating them. The old rank of leaders has had the last 50 years. These young people are icons for the thousands who will chart Nigeria’s course for the next 50.”

The 50 young leaders will be unveiled to the media a few days before the event and, according to the organisers, the list will unveil the true legacy of TFA, parading a crop of achieving and inspiring young people that the awards team has found since 2006 – scientists, engineers, pioneers, entrepreneurs, and from all over the country. These 50 will be honoured and celebrated at the event.
“That celebration is themed #TheAuthenticCelebration,” Atafo says, “because we believe that any celebration of Nigeria@50 that does not have the youth at its centre and at its core is not legitimate. Our country is defined by many problems, however the fact that young people have managed to excel in spite of the many problems is what we should be most proud of. That faith that the young people have retained in the country is most responsible for its existence and most responsible for the hope that we have in the nation’s future – and what we are doing is celebrating that hope.”
Also at the launch event, the 20 categories for this year’s awards, the judges, the cities to be visited with Town Hall Meetings and other details will be unveiled. The media campaign for this season, which is always highly anticipated and drives all the season’s activities, will be unveiled. The last two campaigns “I am the future” and “I represent Naija”/”I represent Nigeria” were very popular, viral successes and continue to be popular years after, spurning other similar campaigns.
More info on the awards and this year’s event will be on www.thefuturenigeria.com.

NIGERIAN YOUTH TO REPRESENT NIGERIA AT THE WORLD YOUTH CONGRESS

The 5th world youth congress is an international platform focused on youth and sustainable development. It brings together the most active young leaders who are changing their communities. As a result of our active commitment to our community, cultural values and our work to achieve the millennium development goals we got an invitation as a young journalist and as a young activist to be part of a dynamic programme designed to be a catalyst for action.
This years world youth congress is to be held in Istanbul Turkey as the European capital of culture which brings us to the history of one of the oldest civilizations of the world - which is now the 2nd fastest growing modern economy in the world after China, crossroads of civilisations - a meeting point of two great continents.
With the theme of the congress "IMCEE" a Turkish word which refers to an ancient tradition of solidarity – working collectively for the common good. We hope to work collectively to make poverty history in our lifetimes - and create peace, human rights, democracy, trust, volunteerism and a prosperous green economy that will bring sustainable happiness to every race and nation on the earth.
Through various thematic and skills workshops, action projects, seminars, roundtable table discussions, cultural events, we hope to return to Nigeria to make a mark and impact the young minds to get involved and support the various Millennium development goals through different action projects in communities, schools and environs. The deadline to achieve the MGD's is 2015, we need to act now and collectively work together with the government, students, leaders, and companies etc to make earth a better place to live, because earth is our own.
We need private companies and the government to support our active participation and to fly the Nigerian flag at the congress by sponsoring us for this life changing event. Nothing is free even in Freetown, so we employ private companies to showcase their products and services through us at the congress in Istanbul. We would be delighted to forward proposals for your co-operation. Please let the support keep coming in, thank you all.

Poetry Potter

Poetry and its Business

The stage is set; Kowry Kreations Media raised the bar of poetry
business in the country and Africa at large, with its 30th edition of
POETRY POTTER, the monthly poetry event. This edition of the event
commenced the three consecutive months of Red-carpet event for
Poets/Spokenword artistes in Nigeria. The organisation is proud of
being the first to introduce this social element into an aspect of
literary arts that is relegated to the elites, in the country and
Africa at large.

Speaking at the event, Seun Ajayi said, “It’s not that red carpet is
something we created out of vacuum but the strategic usage of it is
what we are proud of.” This is said be to a kind of movement that will
play a major roll in the contemporary history of poetry and
performance poetry in Nigeria and Africa by the Project/Programme
director of the organisation.

Poetry is in everything called entertainment. The business aspect of
this genre in the Nigerian and African oral literature is essential
for its promotion and income generation too. This is the hallmark of
Creative Lives, an initiative of the British Council, which is target
at making creative workers entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs in the
Creative Industry are expected to start contributing at least 30% to
the Nigeria GDP per annum.

With this initiative of Kowry Kreations Media attempts to spur the
business of poetry/spokenword in the country and Africa as there are
series of poetry events pilling up by the day in Nigeria and Africa at
large. Particularly, poetry is strong in South Africa, Ghana, and
Kenya amongst other Africa countries.

The producer of the event, Aderemi Adegbite, said “this movement is
directed at making the genre as lucrative (business wise) as its
sister genre, music.” He continued by saying that “we hope introducing
some social elements into the promotion of poetry will push it a bit
forward from its current point. And we promise to do this consistently
with integrity.”

The renowned poet, Odia Ofeimun had consistently maintained his stand
that poetry performance should be as lucrative as it is abroad at
literary and arts fora. If the arts promoters and managers pay more
attention on this area it will be another means of income generation
in the literary arts sub-sector of the creative industry in the
country. Music and film are doing well as sub-sectors against all
odds.

As always, Plus One, a new hip-hop group of three young and creative
minds and Felyne, a Nigerian female rap artiste based in the US, were
the guest artistes of the month. Plus One, the three young energetic
men dazzled the audience with their performance and Felyne who said
her brand of hip-hop is a blend of Nigerian music with rap convinced
the audience that she knows her onions.

Open mic segment of the event featured rang of artistes of different
arts, background in poetry and music. Some sang and performed their
poetry in plain language but in an entertaining manner. But
Cornerstone and Uche Nwadinachi used their poetic license profusely to
mirror the hanky panky in the government.

With these partners: Capricorn Tents&More and HEV Pictures/Snap, of
Kowry Kreations Media in this movement, Poetry Potter can be said to
be aiming at its peak.

The Future Awards meets Vice President Goodluck Jonathan

The Future Awards meets Vice President Goodluck Jonathan … hits Abuja and Kaduna with Town Hall Meetings

The organisers and selected winners of The Future Awards recently met with all the key government officials in charge of youth matters in the country when they paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. Also present at the meeting were the Minister for Youth Development, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi and the Senior Special Adviser to the Vice President on Youth, Mrs. Morenike Soyinka-Onijala.

The delegation was led by Dr. Reuben Abati, chairman of The Guardian Editorial Board as well as chairman of The Future Awards Independent Audit Committee. Dr. Abati, after expressing the regrets of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Pat Utomi, who was initially billed to be at the meeting, introduced the project and its organisers. He mentioned that the organisers started this project when they were all under the age of 20 – the youngest of them was even 17 – and they have grown from strength to strength. You would be proud of them.”

The 5th edition of The Future Awards is presented by HiTV and RedSTRAT, with support from the Federal Ministry of Youth and the International Finance Corporation. It is the flagship platform under The Future Project, Nigeria, which is an umbrella of projects and programmes that seeks to inspire hope in young Nigerians, direct them to work for change and to add practical value to society.

After an introduction of the idea by its Creative Director, Chude Jideonwo; the PR Director for the Awards, Emilia Asim-Ita, briefed Dr. Jonathan on the plans for this year. She spoke about the town hall meetings in 8 states, as well as the UK and Ghana in October and November, the awards’ relationships with international organisations and other countries, and its other outreach projects like The Future Enterprise Support Scheme (TF-ESS), The Future Mentorship Programme, The “Do Something” Conferences and The Future TakeAction, amongst others.

The Vice President, who has shown something of a soft spot for The Future Awards having sent a representative for its 2008 edition, as well as helping the awards open a relationship with the Ministry of Youth, noted his admiration for the work that it is doing to present a new face for Nigeria. “This is the true way to re-brand the country,” he said. “Because you cannot say you are re-branding and not have the youth in the forefront. We need to show the world that all those negative news that goes around is not representative of Nigerians. I promise you the support of my office through the Ministry of Youth.”

After the visit, the town hall meetings began in earnest that evening – where young people in Abuja were told about the award categories, the nomination process, and this year’s judges, amongst others. Amidst performances by some of Abuja’s hottest singers and comedians, including Lindsey, Yoye, El Nathan and The Governor, the campaign theme for this year’s season “I represent Naija” was also presented, with its TV/radio promos, and the merchandise.

Last year’s Business Owner of the Year (Mosunmola Umoru), Style Entrepreneur of the Year (Uche Nnaji), Magazine of the Year (Ace, whose publisher is Bukunyi Olateru-Olagbegi) and Screen producer of the year (Onye Ubanatu) winners also spoke about all the work they have been doing with the awards over the past year, especially the School Seminars, amongst others. “The opportunity to share my story with other young people and to see their earnest reaction made my heart glow,” Ms. Umoru told the guests. The event held at JB’s Place, Maitama Amusement Park.

“This is first phase of the town hall meeting in Abuja; for young people that control processes and wield a measure of influence in their sectors,” said Chude Jideonwo. “What we are working towards is a ripple effect. When we interact with these youth leaders, they become ambassadors and spread the word to the young people they employ or work with. The second phase is in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Youth – and will involve a mass of more young people, especially students.”

Guests included broadcasters Tyeng Gang, Chioma Chuka, Alu Azege, Bennie Arc; advocacy professionals Linus Okorie, Ohimai Amaize, Alkassim Abdulkadir; convener of the Sardauna Awards, Hassan Rilwan, PR consultant, Ijeoma Okeagu, amongst others. It was held in conjunction with Chocolate City and naijaborn.com

The organisers and winners also went on a blitz of media interviews in the nation’s capital, and then went on to the town hall meetings in Zaria, Kaduna, courtesy of HiTV. The organisers also visited youth events - altogether speaking to about 1000 young people.

The town hall meetings now move to Yola in Adamawa State and Enugu in Enugu State. Nominations are still ongoing at www.thefuturenigeria.com – with categories including Best Use of Science, Best Use of Technology and Excellence in Public Service. The awards hold on the 7th of February 2010.
