DENRELE EDUN
No. he's not crazy. he's just a hyperactive kid with a crazy imagination making us all believe he is crazy. in this expose, denrenle reveals his thought on most of his favourite things.
Date of birth: June 13, 1983
Relationship status: single
Political views: moderate
Religious views: liberal
EDUCATION…
I went to St. Gregory's College, Ikoyi for my secondary education and went to further it at the University of Lagos were I studied English Education. (There are only two schools in Nigeria, Unilag and other schools!)
JOB…
I work at Sound city as the Channel Ambassador/producer/On-air personality. I’ve been working there since June 2005.
If I were to describe my job, I’d say its Madness well packaged in a spunkily sophisticated parcel! I’m always in the studio shooting something or the other, running up and down the flight of stairs in the office, talking on the phone nonstop, editing profusely, screaming my veins out in the office, harassing my fellow co-workers (that’s more fun), rushing off for a red carpet event or the other, looking at my reflection in a makeshift mirror and talking to myself, biting my nails off on what I’m gonna wear next, attending to artistes, previewing videos, proof reading scripts, changing drawers and hiding files,
playing loud music very loud indeed and best of all…Facebook always open!
INTERESTS…
Not only do I model, act, dance like a possessed demon, VJ for Nigeria's music channel (Sound city), eat like there's no tomorrow, I also tear, shred, patch, zip, rip, pin up, hook my clothes and (please, I don’t feature in artistes videos for as living, though I have been in hundreds of videos recall D'banj's "Why Me?" The mad son asked me to make another appearance in his new video and I ran for dear life!) I’m so unpredictable that I’m not sure who I actually am at times?
Noise making! kai, since I’m paid to talk nineteen to the dozen (which I do so frigging well), I love making noise and just shouting for no just cause! Give me a call and you'll see!
Dancing! Them use dance swear for me, kai! You need to hang out with me at the club one night and you'll understand. I don’t smoke or drink but I truly dance like an epileptic convulsing patient! Plus, I can dance for hours on end!
Modelling, my greatest passions and hey! I made good money whist modelling
Music, love music though I can’t sing ONE note to save my life! And I used to be in my church choir, grabbing the laurels for best Chorister (don’t ask me how I did it)
what else? I’m the 8th world wonder. Look, if no one's gonna sing your praises, you do it yourself!
FAVOURITE MUSIC:
LADY GAGA! I love the new album and the single "Just Dance" is making my full-split more splitting! Michelle Williams' "We Break the Dawn" is another piece of ear splitting candy! Can’t explain it anymore, but Ashanti has won me over to her side with her new album and "The way that I love you" is such a melodious haunting anthem! ROCK! Pure unadulterated rock. Maroon5, Depeche mode, Linkin’ Park, Red hot chilli peppers, Daughtry, Fall out boy, etc The list is endless!
Any thing by BONNEY M! I grew up with this group when I was 5 or 6 years. I had an Afro back then and I will jump on my bed with my father's earphones singing "Daddy Cool" and "Fever". My gran was mortified!
"Say it Right"- Nelly furtado
"Flaws and all"- Beyonce (Am I Mad? anything by Beyonce, that sex siren doesn’t get half around plus I met her one on one when she came to Nigeria, In short she wanna notice me die? Don’t biff me o!)
"Ms Kelly". I love Kelly Rowland’s album. I hung out with her and just loved her warm overwhelming personality, so I bought the album to remember her every smile and hug she gave me...Uhhh!
Sugababes, love these babes, they rock! Would do anything to have them on my show!
Femi kuti and the Positive force, Come see me at the African Shrine and you’ll know that madness pass madness!
The Corrs, they rock! The best song writers alive!
Amerie, her legs are killing! Plus I love her new found energy.
FAVOURITE TV SHOWS:
Prison break (the scripting is madcap crazy!), Desperate Housewives (if Eva Longoria touched me, I’ll boast about it till eternity!), Sex and the City, Scrubs (I laughed my testicles off!), Lost (Top notch intrigue), Gossip Girl (girly, I know but the bitching is TOO sweet to be ignored!)
FAVOURITE MOVIES:
Femme Fatale (I would have given anything to be Antonio Banderas in that movie)
Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2, 3.
The Matrix 1, 2, 3.
X-Men 1, 2, 3.
Perfect Strangers, Here on Earth, Deuce bigalow, Jay and Silent Bob, The Hours, Honey, Dream Girls, Babel, etc
FAVOURITE BOOKS:
Anything by MARIAN KEYES...she's the ultimate read! Her books stand the test of time...They come with a health warning, they are totally addictive!
Judith Krantz for polished glamour and matchless sexiness.
Sidney Sheldon for mind blowing plots and characters larger than life.
Louise Bagshawe for steamy hot sex and cosmopolitan chic.....She's so hot on my reading list rite now!
John Grisham for...I can’t even explain....
Adele Parks, Olivia Goldsmith, Sarah Webb, Karen King-Aribisala.....
Ok, I know I was asked about books, but I have read almost all the books written by these authors and I...just wanted to show off a lil.
FAVOURITE QUOTATIONS:
"I'm not a Tease; I'm just what you can’t have!"
"Be a 1st class version of yourself and not a 2nd class version of somebody else."
"Looking good is not only the best revenge; it’s the best self confidence booster ever!"
"Choose a job you love and you'll never have to work a day for the rest of your life."
ABOUT ME:
I’m an angel, I’m a devil, I am sometimes in between;
I’m as bad as it can get and good as it can be;
Sometimes I’m a million colours, sometimes I’m black and white...I am all Extreme! Try to figure me out, you never can!
I’m filled with self belief and haunted by self doubt;
I like to be by myself, I hate to be alone;
I am up and I am down;
I’m a million contradictions, sometimes I make no sense;
Sometimes I’m perfect, sometimes I’m a mess;
Sometimes I’m not sure who I am,
I’ve got all the answers, I’ve got nothing figured out;
For me, it’s part of the thrill, at times part of the plan;
Look I’m not sure who I am!
Walking Tall in His Generation – Olatunde Samson
CEO, Business Impact Limited, Olatunde Samson, has a vision that is working for him and is affecting his generation positively, writes Olaitan Balogun
Twenty-six year-old Olatunde Samson surely has his eyes to the top. And there is nothing stopping the CEO, Business Impact Limited, at least, for now. Humility personified, God-fearing, composed and calculating, he not only knows what he wants, but understands how full well to go about it. Olatunde is from a humble background, but through hard work and a clear vision , he seems to have secured his future, priding himself as the youngest internet millionaire in Nigeria.
And give it to him, while his contemporaries are still scouting for non-existing jobs, he is not only self-employed but also empowering many others, teaching them to explore the abundant opportunities around them, instead of roaming about, searching for jobs that are not even there.
A 2008 Business Administration graduate of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state, Olatunde has trained over 700 Nigerians this year alone and over 70 others have graduated from his School of Wealth Creation within a year.
What started as a decision to take his future in his hands when he was in his 200-level in the university has today blossomed into a full time project. His company, Business Impact Limited, which was incorporated, while in his final year in the university, is basically involved in youths training and empowerment as well as awareness creation for online presence.
“The whole idea of doing something for myself started while I was in my 200-level at the university. My father was training four of us at the time and I asked myself: If I should lose him now, does it mean I will drop out of School?,” he recalled in an encounter with THISDAY. “That was how I started with a friend, training students on campus on the use of computer. I had the idea but my friend had the computer system and we settled for a 50-50 sharing agreement.”
According to Olatunde ,”We started with a computer system, teaching fellow students to be computer literate and charging a small fee. Our pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in the campus offered us the worship centre, free of charge, on the understanding that our training sessions will not clash with church services. And by the time we were leaving the school, we had already increased our computers to 10.”
Recognition of the efforts paid off as Olatunde, in 2008, was honoured by the RCCG of the Olabisi Onabanjo University with the Most Enterprising Male and Most Influential Student Awards.
Currently, a member of the Association of International Marketers, he told THISDAY that “it was while I was graduating that I stumbled on information about internet business.”
He said the business “is not a get-rich-quick thing” as it has its challenges, noting that insincerity is the problem with most Nigerians going into online business. Olatunde however said “if you have a schedule, you can turn it into a system and through networking, increase your stream of income.”
So much has he mastered the art and was confident to tell his parents that he was not interested in seeking employment after graduation. And he meant every word of that. Within a year after completing his National Service programme, he has already established himself as a force to be reckoned with. He features prominently in empowerment seminars organized by various organizations within and outside the country, teaching and motivating youths to become self-employed.
Recently, Olatunde got what may be regarded as a rare birthday present, when, on the eve of his 26th birthday, he was honoured with the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the 15th Success Digest Enterprise Awards 2009 which held in Lagos at the same event where the Chairman and chief executive of Coscharis Group of Companies, Sir Cosmas Maduka, and six other achievers were honoured.
According to the organisers of the Awards, Olatunde, who apparently was the youngest of all the awardees, was honoured in recognition of “his courage to venture into entrepreneurship at a very young age while his colleagues are still looking for paid jobs.”
The Award, according to Olatunde, came as a surprise. ”I was not expecting it. It was a surprise for us.. We didn’t pay a dime, neither did we bargain for it,” he said. He however added: “The organisers must have been watching what we have been doing. I feel so great, appreciating God for this privilege. This award places on us a big challenge, to bring more manpower and strategies into our programmes.”
His plans for the coming year are therefore instructive as well as challenging. ”As we talk, we already have a plan for the first six months of next year to train youths in institutions of higher learning,” he disclosed, adding “we plan to move into the 36 states of the federation with our youth empowerment programmes.”
Olatunde recalled his experience in Ghana at the African Internet Summit, saying “We did the first edition in Nigeria and in September 2009, we had the Ghana edition with about 50 participants. We realised people are interested and we hope to go there next year and move into South Africa as well.”
Olatunde has an advice for unemployed Nigerians, saying internet marketing and related online businesses such as online stock and forex trading still work perfectly. He said greed has however become the albatross for many people.
“Online stock trading is the best online business in the world. Forex trading is the second best, it is still working perfectly and people are still trading in the same market, once they know how it works. But greed is making many people lose,” he said. “People should not be greedy but have a target. An average of $100 a day should be enough. If you understand some rules, you will make more gains than losses.”
To the Nigerian youths, he advised: “They should acquire skills and knowledge. They should be hardworking and rugged. I was working and studying at the same time.” Olatunde however stressed that “They should rely on God,” saying “all I have achieved is by His grace.”

The Future Awards releases Nominees List for 2010!
- Mercy Johnson, MI, Psquare, Omawumi, Tosyn Bucknor, Tolu Ogunlesi, Dare Art-Alade, Asa, others make list
- 8 young scientists discovered
On Tuesday, the 8th of December, The Future Awards released its much-awaited list of nominees for the 2010 edition of the awards. “It’s a rich list!” said Emilia Asim-Ita, the awards’ PR Director. “I am so proud of it; it took two months of gruelling work and research, but I look at the list of another 160 high-achieving young Nigerians and I think to myself: wow, we have been representing!”
The long list was released after two months of calling for nominations, and having town hall meetings across eight states of the federation (Osun, Adamawa, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Enugu, Abuja and Kaduna), in conjunction with HiTV, as well as Accra, Johannesburg, Manchester and London, reaching out to young Nigerians in order to get a fine spread of nominations and participation.
All the nominees are Nigerian citizens aged 18 – 31.
In the Musician of the Year category, nominees are Wande Coal, MI, Kel, Darey, Rooftop MCs, Banky W and Psquare. Actor of the Year has Mercy Johnson, Omoni Oboli, Ali Nuhu, Nonso Diobi, Kemi Lala Akindoju, Mercy Aigbe, Tonto Dikeh and Mnet Tinsel’s Gideon Okeke.
The Journalist of the Year category has Toyosi Ogunseye (The Punch), Ruona Agbroko (NEXT) Rachel Ogbu (Newswatch), Funke Adetutu (BusinessDay) Chinedu Iroche (NEXT) Afolabi Adekoya (Citypeople), Segun Adeoye (TELL) and Amina Alhassan (Daily Trust).
“The Best Use of Science category was particularly challenging, and we were afraid more than once that we would not get nominees and would have to cancel it,” Ms. Asim-Ita said. “But at the end of the day, we were pleasantly surprised.” The eight nominees in that category are nominated for inventions and research in malaria, electricity inverters, magnetic safety bumpers, waste management solutions, and robotics.
Another challenging category was that for Excellence in Public Service. According to the Central Working Committee report, which full version can be found on the website www.thefuturenigeria.com, “Where there was some challenge with the Excellence in Public Service, not surprisingly, with questionable achievements, unanswered questions and integrity constraints, doubling down on research and investigation led to expand its scope rightly to include all those in institutional decision making. Therefore, we were able to find impressive young people in a wide range of areas from the UNFPA to the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.”
Other categories include Best Use of Advocacy, Best Use of Technology, On Air Personality (TV), On Air Personality of the Year (Radio), Screen Producer of the Year, Music Producer of the Year, Business Owner of the Year, Creative Artist of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Model of the Year, Magazine of the Year, Style Entrepreneur of the year and Team of the Year. All of the names can be found on www.thefuturenigeria.com, as well as details of the voting and judging process.
The nominees for Young Person of the Year, which is the highest of all the categories, are Tolu Ogunlesi, who won the CNN African Journalist of the Year award this year, musician Asa, music producer Cobhams Asuquo, malaria researcher Ify Aniebo, youth advocate Toyosi Akerele, movie producer Stephanie Okereke, dance professional Qudus Onikeku and Big Brother 5 host, IK Osakioduwa.
The two-month judging process begins immediately. Members of the Audit Committee judging the awards include Reuben Abati, Segun Odegbami, Hafsat Abiola, Muhtar Bakare, Peace Fiberesima, Siene Alwell-Brown, amongst others. The awards proper hold on 7 February 2010. The confirmed Keynote Address speaker is Managing Director of the World Bank, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The Future Awards Season 5 wraps up tour with London, Johannesburg, Benin and Ile-Ife
“There is no excuse for bad behaviour,” said Affiong Williams of the Nigerian Youth Network in Johannesburg, “Yes, things might have been bad for Nigerians that migrated here, but what is wrong is wrong and we must condemn it and begin to project positive values wherever we go.” Ms. Williams was passionately contributing to the discussion by young Nigerians living, schooling and working in South Africa, who were part of The Future Awards Johannesburg Town Hall meeting on the 28th of November.
The international arm of the awards’ town hall meetings had the aim of interacting with and inspiring young Nigerians living in countries with substantial Nigerian populations. Not only do the events have inspiring conversations and try to get widespread nominations for the awards, they also seek to spread the message for this year’s campaign themed “Representing Nigeria”.
The Jo’burg event held at the Dio Bacco in Norwood and had in attendance, the MD of Lowe Lintas in Nigeria, Big Brother host IK Osakioduwa (who is a two time winner of the awards) and was held in conjunction with SA company Naijaborn.com.
The Future Awards, in conjunction with HITV, which is sponsoring all the town hall meetings, also stormed the United Kingdom. The London Town Hall Meeting held at the University of East London, and was held with support from Oloja.com, MakeImpact led by former nominee Dayo Isreal, Godwin Odusanwo of the Nigerian Students Association and Joseph Britus of the International Students Association.
Held on Wednesday, the 18th of November, it was an evening of brilliant discussions, music and comedy, and had in attendance the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, who is an alumni of the school, amongst others.
The Future Awards team also visited other organisations and events whilst in the UK, especially in London and Manchester, including the 1st Nigeria-Ghana Networking Summit in the UK, where they made presentations, and then they honoured invitations to speak with congregations at the World Evangelism Bible Church, RCCG Victory house; RCCG Freedom of Christ Church, RCCG Freedom House and YADA ministries. They were also hosted by the wife to the Nigerian Deputy High Commissioner to the UK, Mrs. Rose Nwanna.
“It was a fantastic time,” according to Adebola Williams, Operations Director for the awards, who was in the UK. “Usually most of what we hear about young people in the UK is, fairly or unfairly, negative; so to get such a fantastic reception, such passion, such engagement and such positivity, was such a blessing. It was also great to encounter huge name recognition for The Future Awards and its parent body, The Future Project. Change really is coming!”
The Future Awards also visited Osun State, where it had a town hall meeting at the Obafemi Awolowo University. It held at the Health Sciences Lecture Theatre. Speaking at that event were the Marketing Director for the awards, Emilia Asim-Ita and one of its Resource Group members, Kemi Lala Akindoju. The event also discovered Ile-Ife music talents, one of whom will be joining other talents identified in other states to feature on a Nigeria@50 commemorative CD called “I represent Nigeria”.
The town hall meetings for The Future Awards Season 5 officially wrapped up on Sunday, the 29th of November, with the Benin Town Hall meeting, which held in conjunction with the Benin-based Christian Fellowship International. The major speaker was The Future Awards Business Owner of the Year Winner, Mosunmola Umoru.
At the end of the day, The Future Awards visited every single state that it promised – going to ten states of Nigeria (Rivers, Cross River, Edo, Adamawa, Kaduna, Benue, Enugu, Osun, Abuja and Lagos) and three countries, and met and interacted practically and successfully with thousands of young Nigerians.
“We’re grateful to God,” Mr. Williams said. “And immensely grateful to our partners like HiTV who made this possible. We can’t wait to release the Nominees List of the brightest and best young Nigerians in the past year – because that is what it is all about, inspiring and supporting young Nigerians; and that makes all this hard work worth it.”
